Santa Zita 2011: Piazza Anfiteatro and the city in flower
Every year, on the 27th of April, Piazza Anfiteatro fills up with flowers, scents and colours. On this day Lucca celebrates the memory of Santa Zita, the Saint of poor people. Everybody in town knows the story of Saint Zita. Zita, born in the XIII century, was known for her generosity towards the poor and the afflicted. Whenever possible, she gave food to the less fortunate. She used to put it in her apron and distribute it. One day her employer stopped her and asked what she was hiding in her apron. She answered that had she had were flowers, and when she opened her apron, it was really full of flowers.
