Although she also designs paper objects such as vases, miniatures and furnitures, it is her paper dresses, and more specifically her creations related to the history of costume, which have have been widely displayed. De Borchgrave has replicated quintessential examples in the history of costume—from Renaissance finery of the Medici family and gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie-Antoinette (“The livingroom of Marie-Antoinette” is on permanent display at the Palace of Versailles) to the creations of the grand couturiers Frederick Worth, Christian Dior, and Coco Chanel.

Working in collaboration with leading costume historians and young fashion designers, de Borchgrave crafts a world of splendor from the simplest rag paper. Painting and manipulating the paper, she forms trompe l’oeil masterpieces of elaborate dresses inspired by rich depictions in early European painting or by iconic costumes in museum collections. Today, Isabelle de Borchgrave has become a name that is readily associated with fashion and paper. After a 40-year career, she still exhibits her large folded paper works all over the world.

The artist interprets blossoming love in ‘Le bouquet jaune‘ (1975) and in the romantic ‘Dans le ciel de Saint-Paul‘ (1980). ‘Le clown au visage bleu‘ (1980) and ‘Le trapéziste‘ (1978-1980) depict the world of circus life that so fascinated Chagall. In ‘Le roi David‘ (1980), Chagall approaches religion, a theme which was particularly important to him. This ties in with the 105 copper etchings depicting Bible stories, created between 1931 and 1939.

The exhibition was conceived and curated by Stefania Trolli. Also involved are Luciano Caprile, who edited the official catalogue, and the SEM-ART Gallery in Munich.

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-French artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist, and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Before World War I, Chagall traveled between St. Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern European Jewish folk culture. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country’s most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avante-garde, before leaving again for Paris in 1922. He had two basic reputations, according to art historian Michael J. Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism’s “golden age” in Paris, where “he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism.” Yet throughout these phases of his style “he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk.” ”When Matisse dies,” Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, “Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is.”Through his imagination and strong memories Chagall was able to use typical motifs and subjects in most of his work: village scenes, peasant life, and intimate views of the small world of the Jewish village. His tranquil figures and simple gestures helped produce a “monumental sense of dignity” by translating everyday Jewish rituals into a “timeless realm of iconic peacefulness”. Chagall biographer Jackie Wullschlager terms Chagall a “pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters… [who] invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the twentieth century.”
